because I hate them. Is hate a strong word? Sure! Should it be applied to yogurt commercials? YES. ALWAYS AND FOREVER.
Every single time I see a yogurt commercial on TV I either change the channel or mute it (I also do that when the education connection commercials come on but that’s not really relevant. SO.) because they just infuriate me. Why? Well…I’m NOT an idiot, but these commercials insist on treating me (as a woman) like an idiot. Let’s start with the obvious.
DO YOU LIKE PIE? Then you’ll love yogurt!
I feel like the commercial is telling me, “Oh hello, you are a lady! Ladies like to eat sweets don’t they? To the point where it interferes with their daily lives, am I right? Chocolate, right ladies? Riiiight? Want to eat pie or pie flavored things all day AND lose weight? I know you do, because you’re a lady! Watch that figure and eat sweets! It’s perfect, am I right ladies?”
NO COMMERCIAL. NO. GO AWAY. Of course I like sweets, everyone does. But if I want to have a slice of key lime pie, I’m gonna go have a slice of key lime pie. NOT key lime pie flavored yogurt. Especially because that yogurt has almost as much sugar as the slice of pie. Sorry yogurt. You lose. And don’t get me started on the ‘low-fat’ versions. Gross. That ‘artificial sweetener flavor’ is just not appetizing. Do not want.
Also, commercial, STOP ACTING LIKE YOU KNOW ME. You don’t. Stop acting like you know what women want. Because clearly, you don’t. Just. Stop it.
And what I hate most….You’re lady and you want to be healthy, but exercise and choosing good, whole foods is hard for you, so let us do it for you!!!
Uuuuuuuugh. I swear this attitude in marketing ‘health foods’ toward women (not just yogurt) is insidious. How many of these commercials talk about eating clean and picking up a pair of dumbbells? How many? None? EXACTLY. Lifting weights isn’t ladylike! Neither is eating steak! So just eat Special K and yogurt all day and you’ll be dancing around in a bikini in no time! The worst part is that a lot of people don’t take the time to research things, so they fall into this trap. They feel they are healthy because their cabinets are stocked with Special K, Yoplait Light, Healthy Choice, and 100 calorie snack packs. And I’m not talking smack about them, because I’ve been there before too. I’m talking to all those companies that flood us with these messages. It is incredibly irresponsible, but they don’t care because they’re making their money.
The worst part is when you try to tell people that these foods aren’t good for them, they look at you like you’re crazy. Great job Yoplait marketing department, now everyone thinks I’m a crazy food snob. THANKS FOR THAT.
Stupid yogurt. If you haven’t seen it already, check out Target: Women’s awesome video about yogurt.
